That's understandable because it's intuitive until we take into account the physics of light. Positioning a light closer to an opaque object makes the object brighter than positioning the same light farther away. However, this glass is transparent. So, only the edges of the glass are defined; everything in between the edges remain unseen unless we add a reflector or light source to add a reflection to the other parts of the glass. Regardless, whatever parts of the glass are defined by the lighting scheme, they are defined by bright or dark tones. The brightness or darkness of those tones is almost always a function of the exposure being used, rarely the addition of another light source.
