Grahame, when you shoot something like this are you using single shot or multi-shot mode?

For these I used single shot. My method was to time the pressing of the remote release as the drop released from the tap on this occasion as the drop height was relatively short (approx 6 inches). I have done them previously with a greater drop travel distance and it's a matter of judging the drop position in flight against a position on the background. All very much trial and error with approximately a 20% success rate.

There are many more sophisticated methods that can be used with specialist kit to allow perfect timing but my interest does not go that far.

The important thing is to freeze movement and this is done by controlling flash duration, in this case 1/8th power of the SB600. Increase the power and the flash duration is longer and movement will be seen.

Multi-shot is a possibility and I have tried that before, I did not think the success rate was that much higher and you can then get into flash recycle time problems.

    Very true Bobo,

I did not imagine for one minute that the shiny stainless sink rear would come out as the black you can see at the upper part of the frame and an old A4 folder would produce such a good red SOOC
