    "The Shining"-Halloween

After planning & practicing with my fog machine & coloured gels, I decided to take a slightly different tack after all, this time & the plan was to have an indoor area that was meant to resemble 'The Overlook' Hotel corridor, when Danny sees the Grady girls.
I wanted a before and after, similar to the scenes in the movie. Then for another scene I set up plank outside across the swimming pool, for the girls to 'walk on water' in a general spooky person fashion, with the chilled fog around their ankles covering the planks.....

The day however was hot and very windy, so even with the fog being chilled it still didn't 'sit' as it needed to.

So at another time, I will go back and do the fog on the pool idea & have some more attempts at lighting my fog inside, against the black background. I think I was perhaps thinking of too many different scenes in one at the start of this shoot.

So here are some of the results..

Overlook Hotel & Grady sisters, before....

    "The Shining"-Halloween

    1 from the outside series...
    "The Shining"-Halloween

    & the hotel set after....

    "The Shining"-Halloween

the 'RedRum' in the mirror reads 'Murder' scene copy...
    "The Shining"-Halloween

& some fog inside for fun..
    "The Shining"-Halloween

& the final scene after the axe murder!

Well! Kay -- that was gruesome...I like the series but I did not like the one with the fog machine (#5) much. You are so lucky you have models willing to work the scenes you planned with you...

Nice series, I think #6 could have used a bit more fog or dimmer lighting on the background.

Wow Kay! These girls are totally in-character!

This is some really fun stuff and your set rocks! Love the candles!

I think you have handled the outside shot very well with your BG and lighting exposures. Great shooting angle. Love the girls looking aside. Great shot. Definitely a fave.

    Mirror shot? Brilliant.

I think this is a terrific example of inspiration, vision, planning, and execution Kay. And for the best of reasons (meaning for your Friend). A testament to what can be done with a camera on so many levels and my Heart Sings that you have shared this with us.

The more I look at these the more I’m getting creeped out! I love it!

Very cool stuff! Extremely nice job Kay. This must’ve been a blast to shoot!

    No question about that!

I haven't seen the movie, so I can't comment on the details of the photographs as they relate to the movie. That perhaps explains why there are hand prints of blood on the sheets and blood on the axe handle but no blood on the sisters' hands. Should there be blood on their hands?

    Hi Mike
Thankyou, I am too much of a scardy cat to watch it myself, but my research & watching of certain scenes...tell me that there was a previous occupant of the hotel, who went mad & killed his family- the Grady girls.. in the book they were sisters, in the movie they became twins.... Actually I should read the book, much less scary.
Anyway in the movie, Danny the little boy, can see visions & he sees the girls as ghosts & his father 'Johnny' is at risk of repeating history mudering his wife & son (Danny) so then Danny will be a spirit as well & can thus play for ever & ever with the girls.
So they are victims, rather than perpetrators.. I think!

Thankyou Binnur, John & Terry for viewing and your comments also.
I must admit I think I had almost as much fun, styling the set as I did the actual shoot.
My parents had just sent me a bouquet of flowers after a recent hospital stay for teeth extraction... They were just dying off & took the black spray paint very well. I hope I can use them again in something before they really die off, as they looked so much better than the fake plastic ones in the shops.
    Thankyou again for your encouragement.

Thanks for the explanation, Kay. The last shot is my favorite.

I wonder if, with all the blood and gore on Kay’s set, this resembles one of your broken glass sets Mike!

Nah, the blood is in my kitchen where the glass breaks, not in my makeshift studio.
