Shadow of Leaves in B&W
I posted a color version of the photo shown below in this thread. I initially envisioned the photo in color because I liked the very subtle yellow tones on parts of the tree bark. Those tones were created by sunlight shining through yellow autumn leaves.
Now that I have made the monochrome version, I prefer it because it emphasizes the bark's mosaic-like pattern. It's interesting to me that the bark takes on the visual role of the background even though we know the shadows are on the bark rather than in front of it.
By the way, we're often told that our eye sees the brightest part of an image first. Though that's generally true, there are exceptions. This image is one of those exceptions.
