    A Bird In The Hand...

Found this guy on the deck yesterday morning. Appeared uninjured but was very docile. It was cold (46 F) but I can't imagine that was what slowed him down. I put him in a warm, sunlit spot and a short time later he flew off. All's well that ends well.
    I'm thinking...House Wren?

Awww...she is so pretty...did you get to feed it? You've been working hard again -- your hand shows it. I made a mistake, this must be a male one -- it got a moustache! very nice and sharp and you just got the eyes all right there, mate!

It does look like a house wren, Jack.

Sometimes they fly into our glass slider doors. Luckily, yours was only stunned.

    Good find and capture Jack.

I had a white owl fly into one of my large windows the other night which scared me like hell but by the time I got to it he was off.

Nice one-handed capture, Jack. A bit more of you gnarly looking hand would have made good contrast with the soft feathers of the bird.

    I don't think it is a wren.

Okay, PW, then what is it?

Is it in the sparrow, finch or wren family?

What matters more is that he cares.

    Thanks John.
Thanks Izzie. Didn't feed it, just picked it up, examined it quickly and then put him/her down, didn't want to stress it by over handling it.
Thanks Marie. Funny thing is (and over the years I've had a number of birds fly into windows) this guy was in the middle of the deck, just sitting there, usually if the hit they're right on the ground right near the window/slider. Also, it was race to see who could get to it first, me or the dog.
Thanks Graham, amazing how much noise they make when they collide with a window. Like someone threw a ball at the house.
Thanks Greg, about the hand, I didn't realize that my little boo boo was so obvious. Little slice and dice with a some reluctant aluminum flashing.
As to whether or not it's a wren, in terms of body size, general color, the bill and the pale yellow eyebrow, I couldn't match it to anything else. Maybe one of our birders can pronounce.

    Agreed, Chauncey,

I assumed that was a given, as could be told by his introduction and hand position with the bird in the photo. Sorry I did not make that clear.

Hello, Jack! I hope you're doing great. Very nice image and a rare opportunity you had, holding such a beauty in your hands.

By the way, looks like you had a cut on your third finger!

    Cheers,

Re: A Bird In The Hand...

Hi Otavio, I am doing great, thanks and hope you are too. Fortunately, for whatever reason, the bird recovered and flew off. Much better than the often usual alternative. And yup, I did indeed cut my finger, in retrospect I probably should have used the healing tool :-)
