Vertical or Horizontal?
Not very often this happens but I can't decide which I like better for this scene.

Any thoughts?

Re: Vertical or Horizontal?
I think that they are both good images Gary but vertical appeals to me more - just.

Re: Vertical or Horizontal?
Gary, I think the landscape format is much better (and BTW, a great shot!).
It looks to me like the image could be rotated counterclockwise a bit, and if it were my shot I'd see how it looks as a B&W conversion.

Vertical for me too.
Split the difference and try a 1:1 crop while you're at it!

Re: Vertical or Horizontal?
I think the horizontal format slows down my gaze so I take in more of the image.

Re: Vertical or Horizontal?
I prefer the horizontal image for two reasons. I like that its mist in the middle area is not quite as dense (slightly more revealing of the texture behind it). The shape and context of the layers are revealed more in the horizontal orientation.
The only reason I would prefer a vertical orientation is if it revealed more layers, which in this case doesn't happen.
By the way, the first one is really gorgeous regardless of any comparisons made to it.

Re: Vertical or Horizontal?
Portrait or vertical for me too...I like that we see a bit more foreground and sky in this version.
I do however have a slight preference for the processing it the first (or somewhere between the first and second versions). The second is more defined and seems a tad brighter which seems a little unnatural to me given all the mist. BUT, both work for me as stand alone images processed as is.

Re: Vertical or Horizontal?
I like the horizontal. Not sure why, I studied both of them and the first one creates a feeling of calmness for me.

Re: Vertical or Horizontal?
Vertical by a margin. For the landscape I would like to see it increased on the right hand side to include more or all of the trees on the edge.

Re: Vertical or Horizontal?
Gary,
What makes the portrait oriented image look more appealing is the way it is cropped. The half cut trees in the landscape oriented image makes it less appealing.
Try keep it simple giving the eye less to wander away from the mist and the trees.
Lots of potential in the image. Hope you don’t mind the edit.

Re: Vertical or Horizontal?
No problem, in fact I like the crop.
It adds more drama to the top of the frame and, as you say, it neatness the sides up a bit too.

Re: Vertical or Horizontal?
Both are great; a bit more in favor of vertical; it keeps the subject more focused
