    Carrot

This is one of my first attempts at significant post-processing (i.e., beyond cropping) that I'm happy with. I've tried to bring out the colours, and sharpen the image. Did I go too far? Not far enough? Comments, criticisms, and suggestions appreciated.

I especially like the composition and treatment of the eyes. I don't think you went too far regarding the sharpening but I do think you went a bit too far with the saturation based on my profiled, calibrated monitor.

I mention the monitor only because if you're not using a profiled, calibrated monitor, your display will not be the same as the display used by discriminating photographers; in that situation, they will not be viewing the same thing that you are viewing.

Having said all of that, you'll get even more helpful responses if you provide a larger file for us to review. I recommend displaying a file that is no less than about 1000 pixels on the longest side.

Carrot is a lovely model and has that quintessential "cat attitude look". My cats have it too. They manage to look somewhat annoyed and bored at the same time. I would agree with Mike that the sharpening looks fine. To my eye, the saturation, particularly in the nose is a bit too strong.

Lovely cat I think the nose should be pale pink colored rather than orange.

+1 to Binnur's comment. I saw this one very early this morning but I can't pinpoint what was wrong with it...

Unless the cat actually has a red nose ... it is quite an orange specimen.

Thanks for the feedback--all very helpful. I've tried notching back the saturation, especially around his nose, and come up with this:

    Carrot

    Better?

Much, much better, Mike...I used to have a ginger cat when the kids were very young. I think I poisoned it accidentally with the snail pellets I put around my garden bed. I should had known about beer at the time instead...Here in the US I do not have snails either so no beer, no snail pellets and we have an indoor cat.

    Re: Carrot

Thanks to everyone. Now that I'm happy with Carrot's portrait, I can move on to the others. By the time I've done the other five cats, and three dogs (not to mention to goats, chooks, ducks, and pigs) I'll have gotten the hang of it...

I like the photo of Carrot. My cat does not like having his picture taken.
