    Warbirds over Wanaka 2010

    Hello all,

The following shots are from last Saturday's show. The weather was mostly cloudy, just a few bits of blue sky here and there. It was my first attempt at air show photography and the lens used was my trusty and cheap EF 90-300mm.

    All c&c welcome

Nice one Rodney, Good show wasn't it. Damn those field guns (Howitzers ?) were loud weren't they! Good capture on that.

Yeah it's tough shooting fast moving aircraft against a bright sky - exposure nightmare. Even grey murky cloud can be bright, resulting in underexposed aircraft. I found that switching to centre weighted metering (from matrix) gave some good results and of course shooting RAW so you can push or pull it a couple of stops either way. You just have to maintain the aircraft in the centre as you pan with it.

    Nice shots, Rodney.

I especially like the last one: having the wing-walker in silhouette makes the performer more of a mystery character, instead of an ordinary human being.

    Cheers,
    Rick

Thank you all for your comments.
Its been a busy week, however here is a few more:

Not the most impressive F18 photo ever, however I was very happy it wasn't just a blur

I like the helicopter, I've never been in one but was offered a flight by 22 sqdn when I was 14. Something about them worries me, I can't feel safe if the engines fail.

The wing-walkers are nuts as well. cheers
