"In natural light this is as good as I could do" - You might try to lift some more of the detail out of the shadow areas.
Cheers.

Hello Brian.
I see that you use GimpShop for your processing, but I know nothing about that software. I usually use PhotoShop Elements 10 and/or PaintShop Pro X6.
However, there is a free program called FastStone Image Viewer, which has a good editor that can do the job of lifting the shadow detail. I used it to produce this from your JPEG image:
In the FastStone Colors Menu, I clicked on Adjust Lighting, and made the following changes: Shadows +50, Highlights -40, Contrast +10, Saturation +20.
Hope that helps,
Cheers.

Brian - you may find http://spectacled-bear.hubpages.com/...-FREE-software of help
If you are not already aware of it, there are 3 free downloadable ebooks (pdf format so nothing special required) at http://www.gimp2tutorials.info/downloads.htm
These suggestions come via my son who is an occassional GIMP user.

That was quick, nicely done on the photo and the pad.
