Christina, thank you for you kind words! I'm so glad I have this camera to fall back on, & fill the void for the next few months!

Ali, thank you! Indeed technology is amazing these days, absolutely unbelievable!
What I meant by the FZ40 being a "point & shoot", is that it has a fixed lens, meaning you cannot change lenses. Yes it is quite a capable camera.
I'm getting the kit with the DA L WR 18-55 lens, and the DA L 55-300 lens, (not WR). If I'm not satisfied with this 55-300 lens, then I can think about getting the WR version at a later time. I can't see getting the 50-200 when I want the 300 reach.
Obviously that's fine, Carol. I was just thinking that with the K-50 being WR, you might like to start with a pair of WR lenses that would be an economical package deal. However, if you're using the reach of the FZ40, it is no surprise that you want to start with the 300mm zoom on the Pentax! I'm sure you will enjoy it - anything Pentax DSLR is a pleasure to use.
Kind regards.
Philip

Since last November, I had been used to using the zoom X60 on the FZ70. The FZ40 only has X24. I do like the reach, for my type of photography.
Very nice photos, I like the flowers best.
Indeed, a point and shoot camera is only a good name for these bridge cameras if they are used on auto everything, as you said. These are good images. However, the Panasonic FZ40 is far from being a point and shoot camera although, of course, the vast majority of cameras can be used in a point and shoot manner, i.e. auto everything - is that what you really meant?
I've looked at the FZ200 if I recall correctly before.
That is interesting. I think I have been learning to tell the difference some, but it would be an interesting test to try.(Just joking...). Point and shots and camera phones do produce decent images, as you have clearly demonstrated. I have a selection of four pictures; one done with a point and shoot, one with a cross-over camera, one with a "consumer" DSLR and one with a "pro" body and lens and will ask people if they can figure out which camera took which image.
