It's definitely No 1 for me John. No 2 has been pushed a bit too far IMHO.

John - I think #1 is also better, but looking at it, I'm wondering about your exposure as your foreground is way underexposed and I'd be tempted to bring that up a stop or two. The sky is also showing sensor dust issues.
Discounting all the dust on both, my vote goes to #1 too, John. Good use of the ND and CPL filters. I will remember this post and the replies you'll get in this as I wanted to learn how to use mine too properly.
