Well done, John. This would also work well as a monochrome.
CNN Tower, never heard of it. CN Tower, for sure. My home was in Toronto at the time, and even though I was away from home a lot, attending university at the time , I followed its construction and commissioning quite closely.
CN (for Canadian National); the tower was built by the telecommunications arm of the Canadian National Railways and it is indeed built right beside the main tracks in Toronto on the railway lands). From a historical standpoint, the railways in Canada were always part of the telecomminications business as the main copper and fibre cables we laid along the railway rights of way. It is also one of the reasons that the communications likes would go down at the time of a train derailment, as the cables were often damaged by those events.
The reason for the tower was to provide a straight-line point-to-point microwave signal, the standard for communications in those days
This is a nice shot of the tower, John...I wonder what's it's like to go right at the top where there might be a viewing area...???
+1 to Mike's comment![]()
John, as good as it is, depending on the lighting...it might be a killer image taken at night.![]()
The main viewing area is just above that white "donut" we see looking up. The revolving restaurant is right above the viewing area and smaller grey donut shaped ring closer to the top is another viewing area.
On a clear spring day, I've seen the mist coming off from Niagara Falls in the distance; I seem to remember it being around 65km / 40miiles as the crow flies (about a 90 minute drive on a good day; the crow can fly across Lake Ontario, you can't in a car, though).
Hi Izzie,
Thanks for the comments. I took the trip up once before, the ride is supposed to be the fastest in the world but my ears didn't pop. I have a fear of heights and I was fine on the observation deck but once I went inside I got a case of the dizzies when looking through the glass floor.
