    Warning - I bite!

One of those notorious Cleg Horseflies - the biting female form.

    Warning - I bite!

Found a few bugs and flies today but not a lot of photography success. Most were either lurking amongst the foliage or running past, too fast to focus. The light didn't help either. Too bright or deep shadows and harsh reflections from those shiny insect bodies.

But at least a few first for the year identifications to add to my records.

    I agree on both counts.

One of those things stung me and gave me blood poisoning.

Ugh! The photo is so real I want it to go away. (Can't complain about the technique)

Nice photo Geoff, not sure if they are the same species but we have something similar here called the March fly as they come out in our summer months. Annoying bite but slow when it comes to avoiding an angry victims hand. They usually attack the back of your legs

    Re: Warning - I bite!

I have seen those but never been bitten - touch wood. I did get a bad bite once by something that I would describe loosely viewed from 3 or 4m as very dark and bulbus and fairly large for an insect. I sort of hope I find one to photograph to find out what it was.

    Another nice shot Geoff.

Yes, 'The only good Cleg is a dead one'.

Even when wearing long trousers and sleeves they usually find somewhere to bite. Between the fingers is a favourite spot for them!

I suspect this one had previously bitten someone else so was quite lethargic as I took the photo.

At one site we are seeing a few Deer Flies (Chrysops family) which are very striking in appearance but so far I haven't managed a photo. They aren't so much of a biting problem but when they do bite you really know about it!

A couple of days ago, I was photographing some other insects and when I looked up, one of these Deer Flies was sitting on my flash unit looking up at me!

But it still wouldn't pose for a photo. Maybe soon, I will find one which requires its portrait!
