    Sunrise in Wadi Rum

    Sunrise in Wadi Rum

This is a stitched panorama that I've printed quite large, so the 1600pix long image here doesn't do the photo any justice. Go to Flickr or 500px to view it in its full resolution.

The photo has garnered great comments thus far. One person told me that there's no sense of scale. Do you agree? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Hi Ido, there IS a sense of scale based on the brush in the foreground. It may not tell you if the mesas are 100' or 1,000' tall but they are obviously very large. Nice capture! Very effective use of shadows for modeling the mesas.

No sense of scale? Ya gotta be kidding me.

You make me really jealous because when I was very near there on vacation I didn't have even the few hours needed to stop and enjoy the scenery.

The one thing I'd like you to consider is to minimize the haze using post-processing technique, though I doubt that you'll be able to eliminate it.

    Thanks Mike!

Yes, I too couldn't see what he meant by "no sense of scale". He said that had I sent a person to stand somewhere within the scenery, the photo would've had a dimension that it's currently lacking, something like that. I just thought that the grandiose scene speaks for itself, but still wanted to get some opinions, and what's a better place for that than CiC?

Wadi Rum is incredible. I stayed there for two nights, in a camp called Mohammed Mutlak Camp. The conditions were surprisingly good. The place is known mostly for its sunsets, and since I heard practically nothing about sunrises there, I didn't rush to wake up and get a great sunrise photo. But I woke up pretty early anyway, so I went out with the camera mounted to the tripod, and looked in awe. It was already near the end of the sunrise, but I managed to get a good panorama out of ti.

I tried fighting the haze by sliding the Blacks slider left, but then the shadows became too deep without really helping that much. The photo you see here already has quite a bunch of Clarity, which helped cut down on some of the haze. But otherwise, I thought I should probably let it be, as it doesn't seem to deter from the photo all that much.

Lovely scene. Ditto Mike's comments re. sense of scale and haze. Nicely done.

How large is "printed quite large"?

Roughly 150 x 50 cm. I wanted bigger, but it was too expensive for me as my first big print.

I don't think a person in the foreground would add scale, distraction maybe. Sometimes you just have to spend time longer looking to appreciate and you can do this with this image to get the scale. Well done.
