    Not wanting to hijack anymore with this topic, it occurred to me that by utilizing the
    threshold adjustment layer combined with the color range selection process...
    one could make selections of a myriad of different zones within your image.
    Adjusting each of them up or down to your hearts content.

    William not sure what you mean, trying to get head around it. Would if be any thing like Luminosity masks for different tones, where you have masks for the super dark to super lights and every thing in between. I have added a link to a site about that, have been playing around to get a feel for them.

    That's the guiding principle of LightZone, a free editing app. Ansel Adams in a box.
