    Brian...if you're working on learning layers and whatnot, choose a subject with a simpler,
    less cluttered background. Would make things a whole lot easier.

    Once you become comfortable with layers, masks are an easy next step (as are blending modes and opacity adjustments).

    Masks are just a great way of either enhancing or reducing the impact of the layer on the whole image.

    Try shielding the background with a drop cloth of some kind.
