OK, now I think I'm seeing the whole purpose behind this thread. Thanks for setting me straight.

So, is the consenus then that it's OK to use "Save for Web" as the final step in preparing to post an image to the web, with resizing and sharpening done in the parent image editor?

In much the same way that you could use a dangerous electric kettle as a water jug (i.e. never plug it in to boil water), yes. (Just hope no one plugs it in)

Except I'm sure I have known it strip EXIF data; Save for Web I mean, not the kettle

I'll try that again, next time I have an image loaded.

OK, I think I finally got the picture of what's driving this whole thread. Any other thoughts on using "Save for Web" solely as an output method?

Save for web allows you to save as a png-24 file, instead of a jpeg. It is like a TIFF file. You can save it 100 time over and it will still be better than a jpeg. Image resize, does not offer png-24 file. How can saving a file in a better format be bad????

Just to confirm, I tried this with one of my pigeon shots yesterday and the file is devoid of camera EXIF, this with PSE 6.

I have been trying to 'follow' this complex thread and improve my learning of what to do and how to upload to CinC for the best result. Looking at your two pics above Dave, my eyes can't really spot any significant difference in sharpness/clarity ... they are both really good.
Am I missing something If anyone has the time or inclination, maybe they could summarise the above posts with a 'recommendation' on 'best practice'. As yet I don't use a 'site' for uploading, I simply do 'all' in PSE8, convert to jpg from RAW if shot is in RAW, resize jpg, sharpen and upload. The downside of course is that my pics can only be viewed at the max 700px size.

With regard to loosing exif, all my non-scientific tests have shown that adding frames the 'wrong way' causes loss. Also some ways of text addition/other additions seems to delete exif ... as we discussed in other threads there are many ways to loose this info and they seem not to be consistant.

Yes, the only difference is the lack of EXIF data on the first, as I deliberately avoided using any of the other "Save For Web" features, as Terry suggested. This confirms he was correct that it doesn't affect the quality, as long as you're careful to change to jpg and set the jpg quality to Extra High (80%), to compare, "Saved As" was done at my norm of 9 (out of 12), so that's 75% I guess! However, I won't be changing to the "Save For Web" method though, because "Save As" is quicker (less things to change) and it preserves the EXIF.

Correct, there are many ways to lose it, most of which I'm not smart enough to use (e.g. no borders on my pics!)

Hey ... great 'Image Quality' thread, I missed this one for some reason.
Thanks ... now off to read a printed hardcopy ... I think the ink is just about dry.
