Getting in close and getting detail can often make more of an impact that trying to capture the whole object.

I think the second of these works best becuase there is no clutter in the image.

Nice effort, shooting at an angle to the subject would add more energy, also try more dramatic lighting.

One of the more famous aircraft in the world. But in military form it is the C-47 (C for Cargo) and in civilian form it is the DC-3 where the DC stands for Douglas Commercial. The last of that line was the DC-10. The company eventually merged with McDonnell and that, in turn, was absorbed by Boeing. The current C-17 is built at the same plant that produced many of the DC series.

Thanks for your replies.It was the first time I have taken these sort of photos.I was taking the shots from above the aircraft from the terminal building. Smashing photo of the DC 47. I am planning to visit a few aircraft museums in the future so I will try shooting from below using different angles.Your photo gives me something to aim for.

John, these were some of my first attempts at shooting aircraft, I took so many close up shots, a lot for detail, but mostly to avoid other visitors. Some photos are here 70 years on DC-47 Lands in Scotland

This is another I took.I am trying to show the activity required to turn a plane round before its next flight.
I am open to any suggestions for further improvements.Is it to cluttered?

I like planes too, and shots from unusual angles.

Even better if you can get all around and under them, I did that once with an Avro Vulcan.

The only problem is that I found shooting from ground level (as a patron of an air museum) was rather limiting - I could imagine some great compositions, but I would need a cherry picker or scissor lift to get me 'up there' to obtain them. Mind you I'm not keen on heights, so the thought of going up on a wobbly one, esp. if windy, would concern me, although I think the opportunity would be too good to pass up and the photography might just take the edge off the fear

I'd recommend a visit to an air museum which has some of the larger exhibits you can wander under, although they do (in UK at least), tend to show the ravages of our climate

I do prefer #2 for the simplicity.
You could possibly clone out the cones and red railings in #3.

I intend to revisit Duxford,it's over 20 years since I last visited.I have also had a go at cloning out the cones and lines.
