What size was it, Mats? Rather looks like one of the Empis flies to me.

Tough question Geoff. About 7 mm maybe. Hard to say since the picture's not new.

Thanks for the tip about Empis. I looked it up and it seems to be an Empis livida. It's a kind of flie and obviously not responible for any bloodsucking at all. Case closed. The fly is free to go. Thank god I didn't smack it.

Great shot Mats It must be very difficult to shoot such a go go thing, they feel even you get closer to them and just fly away.

They aren't harmless if you happen to be a smaller fly though, Mats.

See some Empis tessellata in my recent post. Even Insects do it!

I'm finding a lot of this species now around where I live. They will feed from flowers or kill other insects for food.
