I like the first image even though part of the viewers on the pier are partially cropped. Also, the umbrella really stands out in an image that is mostly reflections and silhouettes.

Hi Leslie.

I prefer #2 because it contains all we need to know. For example we are reasonably sure that the pilings support some form of boardwalk or pier. In #1, the eye is pulled toward the railing because of the high contrast, and yet it is not the main subject or part of the story the image tells.

No.2 for me also Leslie because I find the pier and in particular, its railings, slightly distracting. I very much like the image though. It's almost mono apart from the umbrella. That's quite effective.

The first option places the scene into some sort of context where the people are part of the scene but don't dominate the situation.

If the light angle was different or they were a little closer together I may have preferred #2 instead.
