Bob, Geoff, Greg are you there?

Hi Bob,Geoff and Greg,do you remember my thread about a landscape without a GND filter. Please just click to see Landscape/From a day in the woods

As I told you in that thread I just started learning layers in PS CC with the help of a book, but I think layers subject is so vast that although I studied 'layers' in lesson 4, it is continuing in the following lessons too.So I didn't want to lose time and I decided to try your suggestions on my own.

-Bob, I made the edit you suggested ,thanks a lot ,here is the result .I could have improved it more, but I didn't bother myself because my main point is 'learning the way of edit' ,I can make adjustments to my taste for different photos in the future.

-Greg,I applied a layer as you suggested, set the blending mode to screen, adjusted the opacity, added a mask. But after that I'm lost. How am I going to paint out the sky,do I have to flatten the layers in the end?If you could give me some more detailed explanation,I think I will be able to finish the edit and upload the result for your comments

-Geoff,when I apply an adjustment layer with a mask (I tried brightness and contrast) it effects the whole image .So how am I going to apply it to only the dark ground part of the image? As far as I understand my book teaches these kind of things in the following lessons.I think what I studied about layers yesterday was just the basics I will be happy If you could give me some more detailed explanation so that I would try your suggestion and upload the result for your comments.

This is my original uploaded in the thread before

Hi Binnur, I am no expert on editing as I am still learning too. I yes elements and to selective make a change to just part of an image you would use a selection tool to select the area you want and then the adjustment will just affect the selected area. Hope this helps. At least that's how I do it

Hi Greg,I think I found the answers to my questions by guessing and trying.I painted out the sky with Brush Tool (B) and flattened the layers. Here is the result.I hope I followed the right way

Hi Geoff,I made the edit in the way you said by guessing the details .I applied and adjustment layer (brightness/contrast)with a mask. Then I painted out the sky with the Brush Tool, then flattened the layers.I hope this is what you meant

Yes that is the general principle, Binnur.

Just as an experiment, try varying the layer blend mode and see the considerable alterations which can be made. Soft Light or Overlay increases saturation; multiply makes a very strong image; luminosity is handy because it just changes the brightness without altering the saturation which can be a problem with Curves.

I normally use Curves for this sort of thing because it can give you much finer adjustments.

So this is my quick edit.

When editing a mask I use a soft edged brush with an opacity around 20% and gradually repaint over the scene to slowly reveal (or hide) below the mask. And if you go wrong, you can simply change the 'brush colour' and do a little correction.

Sometimes it is best to use a Reveal All mask then hide what you don't want while on other occasions it is better to Hide All and then reveal what is wanted. This decision becomes easier with practice.

Once you become familiar with this practice you will find all sorts of unexpected uses!

Thank you very much Geoff.I will try your suggestions about blend mode.I haven't tried Curves yet.I thought it didn't work for local adjustments, but I will play with it too. Thanks again

Hi Binnur, I see Geoff has already answered your question. The brush tool is what I use. If you play around with the Curves tool you will able to pull down the blownout area in the sky, too. Try grabbing the top end of the diagonal line in the top right corner of the chart and gently drag it downwards a little bit.

Thank you GregToday I will try your all suggestions to see how they work.My book is making me improve gradually too.I did a white balance adjustment with curves in one of the examples but nothing more yet. So,I have to practise more to learn more
