Barn in shadow Opinions

I am a little put off by the fact the side of the barn facing the camera is in deep shade. I dodged it as much as possible to get some detail to little avail. It would be another hour until the sun moved far enough to light that side and I needed to leave before then so waiting was not an option.

Just wanted some opinions about whether others feel it is enough of an irritant to chuck out the image

I see it as a big black blob in an otherwise beautifully coloured and textures landscape. The problem, of course, is that by waiting fro teh sun to hit that end of the barn, the lighting on the rest of these scene is going to change as well, particularly in terms of its contribution to those gorgeous lines of cut crop in the field.

I think the barn is terrific. You have retained a little color in the dark shape, but it's the darkness of the shape that works so well. That's because the rows of plantings, the shadows on the snow, the streaking clouds on the left and the open sky above the barn all point so nicely to the barn.

The only thing I would suggest is that you add a very slight S-curve to the land (exclude everything else when you apply it). Doing so will add more drama by increasing the mid-tone contrast just a tad and by darkening the shadow areas just enough to match the barn a bit better.

By the way, this decision can't be fully informed unless the viewer is looking at the largest image displayed in the Lytebox.

Hi Trevor,this is a beautiful landscape I can see dark blue colour in the front part of the barn,may be it is better to leave it as the original because dark blue makes me think that where this blue colour has come from and I forget about the rest of the lovely landscape.

Just as I feared!
I alternate between liking it and loathing it with no happy medium between. Now I have contrary opinions from Mike and Donald whose aesthetic sense I value. My wife, who is usually the arbiter of all things artistic, is out of town for a bit and I am thrown on own recognizance and must make a decision. A risky position for a male who has been married for 36 years. Who knows where this free thinking may end?

You're a braver man than me! I'd just defer all decision-making until a) I had written authority that I was allowed to make a decision or, b) my dearly beloved returned.

Trevor not sure what you are using for post, if something from Adobe try selecting just the barn, copy to a new layer, (Ctrl j), now add a curves to adjust just the barn. If possible clip the curves layer to the one with the barn so you will not affect the original layer.

This image is far too beautiful to chuck! Gorgeous colours, and I adore the patterns and lines in the sky and on the land lead to the barn. The darkness of the barn works for me as barns are dark inside and the darkness instills a desire to enter the barn and see what's in there.

I use Aperture, so no layers. However; perhaps I should dig deeper into the program as I discovered (unfortunately I forget who on the site told me) that I was only using part of the tool capacity.

That is a new twist on it. I will see if I can adopt that mindset and see it in a new light.

I'm with Donald - I don't think the dark bar works. A bright red one would have created an interesting blue/red/yellow vibrance, but black, I'm afraid, doesn't quite get there.

I tend to agree. I may regard this as "sketch shot" for future reference and shot setup. I like the composition and just have to wait until the sun swings around to more in the south to light the barn. Could be even better once the crop is ripe in late August

Dedicated or obsessed? There may be a fine line being crossed by getting up at 4 am to beat the sunrise. Then walking a mile at minus 10C. I prefer to think of it as creative rather than deranged.

Very true, and the light angle works well or even better on the ice as you get the reflectance of the setting sun light rather than the dark ice from this angle. The only problem for me is I cannot get there at this time of year in the afternoon. In the morning I can drive in on the frozen mud roads then walk in on the frozen hard snow without breaking through. By several hours post sunrise the roads are a morass of mud and the snow is this horrid heavy wet cement that is mid shin to above the knee. An absolute nightmare. The conditions will be hopeless this weekend as the temperature will hover around freezing and everything will be a sea of mud, water and slush. By mid May (usually) everything is back to dry and hard and access will be a breeze.

I like this shot very much. For me it is about the colours and the wide open space. The barn serves as an anchor point for the eye between the sky and land, and I think too much detail there would be distracting.

I really like this composition Trevor the black blob of a barn is exactly how I would expect it to look .
