    Beginner Moon Shot Question

I am still messing and learning with my Canon 70D. Tonight I wanted to capture a near full moon with some clouds that made it look interesting. While playing with some settings (changing shutter speed, f-stop, focal length), I had this happen. Can anyone tell me why I got a ghost image of the moon?

Settings were: shutter speed 1/160, f/11.0, ISO 100, 75mm, using Canon 70D with EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 lens, mirror locked, on tripod and using wireless shutter remote.

Were you shooting through a window?

Think of it as a sun flare but really a moon flare, you are pointing in the light source.

Do you have any filters mounted to your lens?

I may have had the UV filter on, I'll have to check tonight. And no, wasn't shooting through window, was in the open.

    Re: Beginner Moon Shot Question

About the only way I have been able to get good moon shots in the dark of night is to use multiples. That is, shoot one properly exposed for the moon itself, then shoot one properly exposed for the sky. Then combine the two. Otherwise, there's just too much dynamic range to accurately capture.

You can get some good pictures without using multiples if you shoot when the sky is a bit brighter, before the sky goes to complete darkness.
