The Moon and Saturn (with rings)
The moon and Saturn (with rings)
Thursday, march 20, 10:29 PM, the moon passed in front of Saturn and I took some photos of this occultation with my Canon SX50 HS.
Magnifying the pictures in the back LCD screen, I noticed that Saturn rings were visible (despite of the very low quality of the image).
I don't have a telescope (only binoculars) and I had only saw Saturn rings in photos of book, magazines and newspapers. It was the first time I saw Saturn rings on live view and it was very exciting for me.
C&C are welcome, as always.
Antonio.
#1 - The Moon and Saturn @ 1200mm FFE (magnifying power = 24X)

#2 - The Moon and Saturn @ 2400mm FFE (magnifying power = 48X)

#3 - The Moon and Saturn @ 4800mm FFE (magnifying power = 96X)

These images were obtained by combining two photos using the software Paint (MS-Windows):
1- Photo of the Moon (and of Saturn). I adapted the Sunshine 16 rule and used shutter priority, 1/125, f/6.5, ISO 80 and 1200 FFE (in this picture, the Moon is OK, but Saturn is almost invisible);
2- Photo of Saturn (and of the Moon). Because brightness of Saturn is very faint, I used the photometer indication, that is: aperture priority, 1/8, f/6.5, ISO 80 and 1200 FFE (in this picture, Saturn is OK, but the Moon is very much overexposed)
I don't know how to use the layers tools in Photshop Elements, and because of that I posted the thread How to use layers in Photoshop Elements? in Image Post-Processing & Printing (Tips & Techniques) asking for help.
Cheers,
Antonio

Congratulations Antonio,
I wouldn't have thought it possible, just goes to show, if one doesn't try ...

Re: The Moon and Saturn (with rings)
Great shot of Saturn but I am also impressed by the sharpness of the moon with the 1200 mm FFE setting. I have been thinking about buying a longer lens for my occasional wildlife shots (my longest is 300 which is not enough sometimes especially with my full frame 6D), but your shot makes me wonder if I should get the SX50 HS which would be a lot less money. Any wildlife experts out there that have any thoughts about this?

Re: The Moon and Saturn (with rings)
Dave,
Once I read that with a small telescope (with 100X magnification) it would be possible to see a small image of Saturn and its rings. My camera has a magnifying power of 24X (1200 FFE/ 50 FFE) and I could enlarge it by cutting the image in half twice, reaching 96 X magnification.
Thank you for seeing and commenting.
Cheers,
Antonio.
