Does anyone know if the batteries from my Olympus EVolt 500 can be used safely in my Olympus E3? Of course the local dealer tells me I need a new battery and battery charger, but I'm wondering...the specs look the same to me.

I did a bit of "Googling" for you and agree that they certainly appear to be very similar. So long as they're the same voltage and same connections, I'd be inclined to give it a go and see what happens (* usual disclaimers apply though!).

In my googling about, it appears that the BLS-1 and the BLM-1 have different form factors.

Yes you can use the same batteries in both cameras - they both take the BLM-1.
