Slippery rocks and a bruised shin but it was worth it

I had to clamber over some very slippery rocks to get into a decent position to get this guy. And of course my 25 year old mind forgets that my body is 62. But at least when I slipped and ground my shin down the surface of the rock I didn't damage the camera. But he just sat there and let me get close. Gorgeous bird. All C&C most welcome.

Great shot Peter, Nice bokeh. Unfortunately, the background colors are very similar to the bird. Not much you can do about that. I admire your efforts to capture a fine shot.

Great shot, Peter. I like the bokeh and the colours in the background.

Great capture Peter, I'm sure he's smiling at the effort you had to put into getting this.

We need a thread for images for which you have suffered.

I posted one last year of a salmon leaping (here). That caused me to slip on the rocks and nearly fall into the raging white water below. I ended up with a smashed thumbnail and blood everywhere. But I got the image and the gear was okay.

This one, too, was well worth the effort.

ps - My 25 year old mind refuses the accept that the body has raced ahead by about 30 years.

    Hi Peter,

Yes, it was worth it. A very good shot IMHO. No pain, no gain!

There is a tad of clipping in the bright areas that can easily be corrected to show a little more detail.
    It might be my screen.

Yes you are right and since posting I have corrected it. Amazing how you miss things until you post and then you see the details. Judging by the responses, doing oneself an injury in order to get a pic is not an uncommon occurrence. Just proves we are all probably barking mad. many thanks for the feedback.

That was a very good thread, Donald...things you suffer to get a good shot...

Well the shot was definitely worth some effort. A beautiful bird and well captured. A BG with a bit more contrasting color would have been perfect but we work with what we have. In this case the DOF gave you enough isolation to make it work.

It is amazing what some of us will do for a photograph. Personally I won't take inordinate risks with forethought. But when one gets into the moment it is very easy to drift into situations where one wouldn't normally go. I have about a four inch(10cm) long scar on a shin from stepping off into the bush for a shot of a lyre bird last November in Australia. I was so intent on the bird that I didn't feel it happen and have no idea what I cut my leg on. I only noticed when I started to walk back to the car and saw the rather profuse flow of blood down my leg into my shoe. Then presumably to keep my mind off the pain, while administering first aid my wife lectured me on the stupefying effects of testosterone on human beings.
