I have yet to see any appendages so i am 'guessing' some sort of fungus or mold? But i have to stress the guess!

I thought I could see little eyes somewhere, ie that perhaps this was the cocoon of an exotic tropical butterfly or moth. I couldn't guess at what type of mold or fungus it may be.
