    Instant Ink

hp has a new ink rewards program for specific printers, mainly all-in-ones. When you purchase a new printer you have the option of signing up (for a monthly fee) for ink being shipped to you as it runs out. Your computer is linked to hp website and based on the number of pages you print, they'll send you cartridges immediately.

Ha - what's the bet this will start another round of "many going for it" and a few "spitting the dummy, vowing to never EVER use HP products again because of the way they're holding guns to peoples heads and making them sign up ..."

The fee might be like some of their software. Once installed it can be extremely difficult to get rid of all of it.

There is even some in Linux now.

I think this is their preemptive strike against potential class action lawsuits regarding the printing industry high prices and suspected fraud with regard to ink cartridges alerting the user that its empty when there is significantly more ink still available.

Notice that this is geared towards all-in-one units which are probably used by small businesses as well as home users. The big office printer/copier/fax laser manufacturers have been counting pages for years and leasing fees are based on the amount printing, with color prints being charged additional fees.

And the software probably prevents you from using third party inks. Brilliant strategy!
