    Red Sails in the Desert

I came across three sets of these plants in the high desert, this one with three blossoms, another with five blossoms, and a third with a bouquet of blossoms.

I thought this one was interesting because of the 'S' pattern made by the green stems, red blossoms, and the line of rocks. It made a colorful addition to the parched earth.

I don't know what it is so please chip in if you know it's name.

....and of course, C&C is always welcomed!

Thank you Izzie. Your kind comments are far more important than the name.

I agree, the stones add to this. Nice composition.

No idea what it is...we don't do parched earth in this part of the world. Good shot. Did you take any from further away to give the flower a bigger context of being in the parched earth which I think would add to it ?

I'm glad you like it David and John! Thank you for the kind comments.

Kate and Nandakumar, perhaps I should clarify my terminology. By parched I mean that there is relatively little moisture. In some cases, there may be more moisture available from the morning dew than from the irregular rainfall that might occur. By desert I mean an area that gets very little rainfall and as a result it supports only sparse and widely spaced vegetation.

Kate, this is the area the flower was found.

Nandakumar, I'm not sure what 'black thing' you are referring to??

I'm still not sure what you are seeing but I suspect that it may be the two dark rocks between the right side of the largest flower blossom and the upper right hand corner?

As far as I know, there isn't anything other than dry rocky soil and the flowers in the image. At my age, there could be a Mack Truck there and I might not notice!

Edit: I went back to the original image and realized that the black 'thing' wasn't a rock after all but rather a piece of broken asphalt from a nearby road, probably broken off by the Mack Truck I also failed to see.

I must admit, Nandakumar, your eyes are far sharper than mine. I should have noticed that before I took the picture! Thank you for seeing and pointing it out to me. I'll need to be far more observant next time.
