    Snowstorm sketches

Credit to Andrew (Andrew McD) for inspiring this with his shots of the powerlines. I thought posting "sketches" (images of concepts that may not work but are experiments) was a good idea as an aid to creativity.

These were taken last weekend with with a 200 mm lens. I was under a covered deck, so I had about 10 feet of clear air before the snow started. This is a one tenth crop of the entire image. The rest of the image is no less cluttered and busy. I was just mucking about and thought I might try this. Now i need to find one lone conifer and try this.

The whole messy thing. I tried other apertures and speeds they were even more horrid; blurred and weird.

Very different, they seem somehow diffused.

I suspect that is the effect of shooting through approximately 100 feet (30 m) of heavy falling snow and the compression effect of the telephoto lens. I was hoping the background forest would be even more obscured, but that was not to be. With a wider aperture it was rendered into a nasty blurry mess of snow and brush.

I was hoping for a more abstract effect. I just have to simplify the background.

I like the tones in middle shot Trevor and will look forward to where you take these sketches. I hope that you and Andrew McD are starting a trend here at CiC so others will also post their sketches and then share with us as they develop.

The cropped images, although abstract looking, have captured the feel of a snowstorm, particularly the b+w. So as an experiment I would judge it a success and well worth continuing with the project. As you suggest this effect seems to be lost in the wider shot, which might be a problem if you want a wider shot on your lone conifer. Good luck with the lone conifer and simple background, look forward to seeing the results of your efforts.

I agree Shane about sketches. However, if it snows here, I've barely enough time to take some snaps, let alone experiment - now rain - that's a different matter.

I missed Andrew's experiments but now I know about them will go looking - what a fabulous idea. I particularly like your first shot - the colours are lovely and I can see it being used as a background for another shot rather than using a blank canvas as a backdrop.

I will have to sit on it for a while; I really don't know if or how I can improve on them in post processing. At this point they are just an experiment. Maybe in time something will click. Posted this because it may stimulate someone else to produce a masterpiece seeing my very raw material.

These have appeal - texture and light are very nice, and they convey a snowfall feel. I think trying to capture the feel of snow falling - in trees especially - has a universal appeal. The hard part (one of them) is to translate the movement of the snow falling and the silence of it as these are attributes of these scenes that compel the capture impulse.
