The wind was howling and I had difficulty keeping still.

For fun and the heck of it, here's another sandstorm, less elegantly shot. This is in Death Valley, which is like a giant pan, in a north wind (right to left) and I'd driven north to get clear of it. Got lots of sensor dust on this trip.

    Isabel,

The “dust” is not from the pan but from the surrounding area. The soil is a beautiful brownish red colour and the smell in the air after rain is a divine.

It usually occurs in the warm dry summer months just after the farmers have ploughed and planted. Strong winds pick up a lot of sand, turning the sky into this reddish colour. (Not very good for a non weather sealed camera.) Some of these storms get so severe that people have to switch on lights in their homes. Visibility can be limited to a few meters.

Beautiful to photograph but not a pleasant experience. The sand gets in every were, nose, ears, hair, kitchen, bathroom, computer and all other places you do not want sand to get into.

    Thank you for viewing.

The openness of the landscape makes it all the more spectacular. Good composition.

    Very nice image, Mark.

I always find it very difficult to get a shot like this, depicting exactly what I see in that moment.
Sometimes a pano works best. My next lens, an ultra wide.
