Interesting image. Well taken, processed and presented. I don't understand it though.

The leading lines vanishing into the horizon convey interminable monotony. Combined with this arid landscape under a relentless, featureless blue sky, I see this photo as a study in desolation.

The left side could represent peace ,tranquility. The right side of the fence could represent upheaval, unrest. Or the artist/ photog could be asking us to kindly shut up!
Nice picture Andre, have to check back later and get others takes on it.

Along with James you have the nice interpretation of something mysterious to my eyes at the time so I went with Bobo about not understanding the motive of the shot. Now that you have explained and with James explanation as well, it had became clearer. I guess I am not poetic enough or the sharpest crayon in my box fell out.

Happy New Year to all of you.

Not sure if there is something in particular to "get" in this picture. But as the title refers to quiet, I find I can hear the quiet, I am transported to that open space beneath a big sky and filled with......quiet.
Nice picture, works very well for me.

I like the graphical nature of the fence. In that regard, the photo would me much stronger for me if it was cropped on the right to eliminate all of the telephone poles.

Perhaps the quiet is constantly disturbed by the whining of the wind in the wires, and/or intermittently interrupted by traffic on the nearby road?

Bobo, Greg, James, Isabel, Andrew, Mike and Philip:
I take my hat off to you people; you really understand “QUIET”.

Greg and James, I could not have said it better. The object of the image is to convey harsh, dry, warm, desolation into infinity. (When I took the shot it was only 35 degrees C.)

This was shot in the most arid, dry, desolate area of South Africa, I have yet visited. Some people call it the “Moordenaarskaroo” - translated: “Killer Karoo”. A stunningly beautiful area, where you get caught up in “listening to silence”.

The shot was taken around 130Km from the nearest town, at the entrance to the Tankwa Karoo National Park, on a stretch of 275Km, between Calvinia and Ceres, +- 250Km of gravel road.
An area worth visiting but staying there – I do not think so. In summer the temperature will sour to the mid 40’s (Centigrade), in winter it gets very cold.

    Thank You.

Good explanations. I did understand the "quiet" part what I do not understand is what purpose does the fence serve in such a desolated area? It certainly cannot keep people/animals out and most certainly cannot prevent people from stealing the sand on the other side.

    Nice fence btw.

The fenced in area is part of the Tankwa National Park.

The area is also known for sheep farming.

    Re: Just be QUIET:

Mike, if all the telephone poles were removed, the plot comparing the silence and the chaos will lose significance, don't you think? The only disturbing little nit I have is that extra triangle at the right side of the horizon...the telephone poles also contribute to the "noise" and "chaos"...

(this is just a question to Mike not an insult to the women in this group..) Mike, have you ever been in a roomful of women all talking at the same time? That to me is chaos! -- the representation of the telephone poles (plural)
