    Street Lamp

At Marlow on Thames yesterday evening (29/12/13), I tried something a bit different (for me, that is), as I haven't done much in low light. This is one of the old electric street lamps, attached to the massive chains holding up Marlow Suspension Bridge that crosses the River Thames.

The image was recorded in Av Mode on a hand-held Pentax K-5II just after sunset - the time is shown on the clock of Marlow Church in the background. I set -2EV to reduce the burnout of the lamp. The lens used was a 18-135 zoom at 135mm and set to f/8 - I wanted the lamp to be sharp and the clock soft but readable. I think that ISO 3200 and speed 1/400s helped reduce motion blur - the bridge was very busy and constantly rocking and shaking with both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, so it was difficult to keep still while shooting!

Works well for me. Photographing lights in conditions like this is never easy.
