    Ciudad de la Fata Morgana

This afternoon when I came home there was a city skyline on the horizon that wasn't there yesterday. It is an example of the phenomenon known as fata morgana. It is a mirage that is above the horizon in this case giving the appearance of tall buildings.

Without reading and just looking at the pic got thinking that Dan must have found a new angle on Colorado.

Now with the explanation - some image you caught. Never seen the likes of this before.

What a find! I, too, have to google the phrase before I know what it is. I don't believe I have ever seen one before either... Now I can remind myself to look.

The natural world never ceases to amaze.

We had more FM this evening but at the wrong angle to the sun. The current weather pattern is supposed to hold for a couple more days so hopefully will get another shot or two at it.

If I remember correctly, this is the second optical phenomenon that you photographed for us. Exceptionally well done!

Thanks, Mike. Yes I posted one a while back but not nearly as dramatic as this one.

That is quite amazing Dan and must be quite disconcerting when see it out of the corner of your eye - that would make me do a double take for sure!

Thank you for sharing and count me as another who was just educated on this phenomenon.

Dan...Alaska is beautiful...You also have Sarah Palin apart from all those phenomenon. She is a looker too. I will particularly be interested in seeing another one of those shots.

    Amazing image!

Who knew that La Fata Morgana (known as Morgan Le Fey in English) was a sorceress, half-sister to and enemy of King Arthur in English legend? I love it when names go all around the world and back.

Exactly. It caught my attention because the skyline was completely different. Looked like a city on the horizon.

Not any more. She moved to Arizona. She's a good example of how far a pretty face can get you in life. That's also one of the pitfalls of democracy.

Another interesting tidbit. It makes sense then naming such a phenomenon after such a person.

I'm off work today and it looks like the weather is holding up. So I may get the opportunity for additional images to day. Maybe with a longer lens.

Thanks, guys. Those conditions persisted for several days though never quite as dramatic as that afternoon.
