I begin to appreciate what can be achieved artistically by taking control of the settings.

    Hi Brian,

I prefer the artistic affect of the one the other day that I did some work on and will post if you do not mind?

It's good to see that you are persevering with the manual control of things and I'm sure that by now you have realised that all you have to do is juggle three settings, it's the best way to go when making images such as this in my opinion.

There's a fair bit of noise in this one when enlarged but I see you used ISO100 so wonder if it is either cropped heavily or you underexposed it and have boosted it in processing. Which one?

Other settings, f8 and 1/250s good. There's a general guideline called the rule of thirds which suggests the most significant part is placed at an intersection of the vertical and horizontal a third of the way across, often works and at times does not. Another guideline is is to give your bug space to move into in the direction it's travelling, not easy here.

May be better to post them at 1200 px width, hides some of the noise.

here is the original. lots of cropping and it was a little underexposed. Please do play with my photo. To see how others would process the same photo is a plus for me.

    Brian,

The problem you had here was the very harsh lighting and it's basically impossible to expose for the shadow and highlight area of the scene. There are a couple of options you could have done, if you new you were going to crop the image you could have exposed for the bug or hung up a sheet, shower curtain or got the wife to hold a sheet of paper to shield the direct sunlight. In addition, another option a piece of A4 paper to reflect light onto the bug.

But, that being said, you have done very well for the condition you had.

Here's the quick play I had, lost sharpness due to working on the small file but the crop is not that far off yours. I also looked at putting him top right but does not work as well. Also the one from the other night.

Not to say these are the way they should be, just another interpretation.
