...with the 35mm CZ Distagon. A little dark but I was shooting without flash and couldn't pose this guy with any shop lighting helping me out, so had to just grab a few clicks where I could.

Lovely portrait, though I'm not too sure about your thinking of it being too dark; I actually thought the opposite- too light. While there are nicer shadfow detail around the neck, this does not appear to beas pronounced on the face. I'd go for a touch more shadow in the face, but as ever this is just my opinion of a really nice shot.

Very well done! Shooting a portrait wide open with a 35mm, not ideal.

An interesting shot Phil, and quite effective. At first glance it almost looks like you are shooting with a white seamless background, until one looks down and realizes it is not.

I find the slight distortion brought on by using a 35mm lens works surprisingly well, it brings out the character of your subject in a very interesting way; the sharpness of the lens really pulls out all of the features in his face. Yes, I find it a tad dark too, but it still works very well!

The 35mm seems to provide a nice editorial look. But the quality's a tiny bit higher than one would expect for that market. Excellent shot.
