Two Amish Farmers Working Nine Plow Horses

I was driving to an important appointment and I left about ten minutes of fudge time to reach my appointment. Driving down a highway I spotted these Amish farmers plowing their field. I pulled off the road with trucks and others blasting their horn, got out of the car, and quickly took this picture and a few others. I wish I had additional time to take more pictures but I couldn't.

    Comments welcomed.

Looks like he's got those horses properly trained...better than I've done with my loving children.
    Aah...I only see one farmer.

    A truly amazing scene.

Plough and disc harrow used together is a new idea on me. Saves time I suppose if the soil is sufficiently friable that it doesn't need to 'weather down'. like out sticky UK soil I've certainly never seen a ride on harrow before.

The only little bit of edit that I would do is to clone out those wires in the background trees.

Hi Chauncey, I don't know if you remember or you ever came across a series of children's books called I Spy. Each page was filled with images of objects that the child had to find. When I developed this image I thought it would make a great candidate for an I Spy book in terms of the missing second farmer. Look at the first row of horses, first horse on the right. You'll see the second farmer.

Thanks Geoff. Yeah, I also thought about eliminating the wires. I don't know if its laziness on my part but it doesn't bother me in this type of image. I want to see what others think.

Karm... Great capture. It does what photography is supposed to do, bringing us to a place and a lifestyle that is different and interesting.

Regarding the "I Spy" picture within a picture. I am terrible doing that but my wife has an eagle's eye and can spot animals, fish and birds when all I see is rocks, trees and water. Even after you directed us, I still had problems spotting farmer #2 while my wife immediately saw him.

However, I love to spot pictures within a picture via cropping. As I was scrolling the image on my monitor, I realized that I really loved this picture with the barn and trees behind the barn cropped out. It makes for a long narrow image, almost like a panorama but, with the cropping just below the tops of the corn or wheat (heck, I'm a city boy and don't know the difference) more emphasis seems to be placed on the horses and farmer....

Nice one, Karm! I only wish the computer I am currently using would do your photograph the justice it deserves.

Once pointed out I see the second farmer. Great shot, something on a calender. BTW, you said 9 plow horses: I see 5 in front row; in back row I count 3 heads and rumps. Is the farmer working on the missing one?

Thanks Flashback. I counted horse rumps in the back row and I came up with five. However, I could be wrong -- they're so crowded together.

I tried your suggested crop and wanted the image to have even more length. I'll try it again based on your suggestion.
