That is Contrast Detection for you ... and last years model at that

    See test "Traumflieger.de

Yes I'm trolling but I saw it at dpreview. Apparently three different tests and the GH3 won each one.

Good thing that this forum has an 'ignore' list then

    Revi :-)

Almost no one cares about focus speed as long as it is fast enough. For most applications it's largely irrelevant whether it is 1 millisecond or 10. My Leica M9 has to be focussed manually - I am pretty quick with it but the 70-200 f2-8 on my 5DIII is so fast it has done it before I have even started thinking. This is pretty much true of most camera and lenses now.

Camera review sites are too often fixated on pointless statistics.

    Hi jcuknz,
    Interesting piece of information.
    I'm 6' 2".

For most people, that's about as useful a piece of information.

Unless I am missing something of importance here?

The important part that might be missed is that there has been a long quibble about autofocusing speed, and that this is held as a major advantage of the so called "phase detection" AF systems in DSLR cameras. A couple of years ago, some EVIL cameras with contrast detection AF surpassed most DSLR:s for focusing speed, and then the focusing speed issue seems to become less important? This was one of the points held against mirror-free systems.

What might be interesting in addition to this fact[oid] is that AF precision with contrast detection is better than "phase detection", as it is independent of calibration. In DSLR cameras, the AF system must be calibrated for each lens, and in far too many instances lenses are not correctly calibrated when they leave the factory. There are also other quirks that make PDAF systems generally less reliable than CDAF. Newer "phase detection" patches in the sensor of EVIL cameras also enable them to refocus correctly for moving subjects.

We actually see a shift of paradigms here. Modern AF systems in EVIL cameras outperform those of DSLR cameras on all points. Now they don't only set focus more accurately with any lens, but also do it faster.
