Seems to me like you have a lot to work with photographically in this environment. Dry tawny grass, skeletal trees, still some green vegetation and, I suspect, nice open vistas. That haze should give you brilliant red light at sunrise and sunset.

That haze on the horizon is called ice fog. It is the frozen water vapour in the air and forms below minus 25 C or so.

No thank you, no trading of winters. South Africans "die" at 5c below zero. We have no idea what a "real" winter is like.
Snow is "exciting" once in 20 years. Although there are parts of SA that do get snow every year.
