    Surf's Up

Just a few surfing shots I took at the beach the other day. Taken with a Tamron 70-300mm lens on a 1.6 crop factor Canon 600D. This sort of shot is not really my forte but the surf was up and there were some good riders out there so I thought I would have a crack.

    Comments welcome.

These are real nice photos. I like #3 the best.

#3's pretty good. It will probably help if you can position yourself so that the surfers are facing you. It's hard to get a good shot of someone pointed away from the camera. The connection to the viewer is stronger if the subject is facing toward them (but not necessarily looking straight into the lens). I'd also try for a lower angle to make the surfers look higher and the waves taller. You've got some great subjects, so you just need to work the scene a bit. Good news is that sharpness doesn't appear to be an issue. Yay for direct sunlight.

Thanks Bruce and Lex for your comments.

Yes Lex a different angle would have been better but for that I would have needed a longer lens. The light was quite good, about 4PM with the subjects front/side lit. I wasn't totally happy with the sharpness of the surfers, shutter speed of 1/400 may have been a bit slow ?

    Hi Dave,

Yes, I think you could have upped the shutter speed since the ISO is way down at 100, but good shots. Did you have to crop much? Specially interested because your kit is exactly the same as mine!

Thanks for your comments Dave. Very little cropping done. I'm not sure how far out they were, probably about 100m.

Dave, second shot is really good. Almost has a product quality look.

Thanks Karm. It's probably the sharpest shot.
