Helpful Posts: My new nephew was born Sunday morning and I had a great time photographing the celebration later that day in the hospital room. I can't understand for the life of me how the parents look so good on only one hour's sleep the previous night and, of course, considering that the mother had gaven birth (at nearly 44 years old).
For those interested in the technical stuff, I used a speed light mounted on the camera and pointed toward the white ceiling. I usually attach a device to the speed light that directs some of the light forward but not this time for two reasons: The adjustable part of the mother's hospital bed and the baby's bassinet were positioned relative to the ceiling so no harsh shadows would be produced under the chin, nose and in the eye sockets. Even though the infant's eyes remained closed the entire time we were there, I didn't want to shine a small light source directly into such young eyes that are still developing. The speed light was in manual mode and I adjusted its exposure compensation to achieve the desired histogram.
I feel compelled to go on record that I don't consider myself a portrait photographer and that these photos prove it; they rank in my mind only as nice, family mementos. The only reason I'm posting them is that some very nice people made a point of asking to see them.

Lovely pics, Mike, of a very nice family. When I started to photograph the infancy shots of my 2 granddaughters, I realized that their skin is so blotchy, uneven and red that I ended up converting most of them to B&W, and tended to prefer for most shots. You might have some fun with that.
