Dan, a nice capture. What was your rationale for getting so close to him?

Love the expression. Nice and contrasty and rugged.

Is the background especially relevant to him?

Firstly I wanted to show the detail in the face and secondly he had eyes which were interesting specifically because they were awful and rheumy. I tried a looser crop but the eyes got lost. I could have done the usual thing and post processed his eyes to make them stand out but I specifically wanted to avoid that.

He was one of several men hanging around on the street corner waiting for the bookmakers to open. Given that he had walked over to me I couldn't show him hanging around so I opted to include, as best I could, some of the others; in an attempt to capture the mood of the area.
