    Editing your profile.....

    Hello new members.

Quite often, you will get a suggestion that you edit your profile to show your "real" name and location. Strangely, you don't do this by clicking on "Profile" at the top of the main screen

Instead, you have to click on "Settings" which is where you change such things, including your avatar. It confused me for a while, so I thought I'd just add a thread where it is easy to see

    Welcome, all

    Dave

    Very important reminder to newbies!

[ couple more bumps by mods should do it. ]

I keep forgetting that way of doing it. I always go the 'Forum Actions/Edit profile route.

    Hi,

I am Bipin form Watertown, SD, US... I stumbled on this site and it looks very interesting and could turn out to be highly educational and productive for me. I use a Nikon D700 and feel need to learn lots more, I like to think I am somewhat better than snap shot photographer.

    Cheers!

Just thought I'd bump this up, since I've just welcomed one or two profile challenged new members .

Maybe "How to edit your profile" could be a sticky?

I have changed my "standard text" that I paste in when needed - thanks to your original post.

Could you do me a favour please?
Could you click Settings (right at top), then Edit Profile (on left) and put your first name in the Real Name field and where you are (roughly) in the Location field? - thanks.

Of course, thanks for the 'heads up' that my "standard text" method I previously used (which I hadn't done myself since 2008), was outdated/confusing

The only problem with this policy is that hardly anyone but my Mother knows me by my "real" name.

Truth is I don't much like that name but it's the one I was stuck with before I had a choice.

On the other hand, I am known by thousands of people as Wayland both online and in the real world.

So which name really reflects my true identity...

Feel free to go with just go with Wayland then - it sounds like a name

The main reason for the 'policy' is to make CiC more friendly than having to address people by impersonal "usernames" like "rustyshutter71" (that was me, here, for a few weeks back in 2008).

Anonymity (on other fora) is probably partly responsible for the lack of respect and rudeness often seen in those places.

    Cheers,

Thank you, I'd much prefer that.

I said something much the same on Luminous landscape when they were grumbling about "anonymous" users. Some of us are much better known by our usernames than what's written on our passports.

    Re: Editing your profile.....

It's no great shake for me really.

I just believe that the name you make for yourself is much more important than the one you are given.

It's odd really, both my parents had first and second forenames and they both used their second ones in normal life.

My brother and I were only given single forenames and when I asked why that was, my parents said they didn't want us to have a choice.

Even then, young as I was, I couldn't help feeling cheated a bit somehow.

Maybe that's why I never liked the name...

We chose two names each for all three kids, so they had a choice in later life (if desired) - and made sure no first initials matched to avoid confusion with mail between them (or us parents).

(I think the latter was probably my wife's idea; she and her sister both have names starting with "P" and I believe it was a continual problem!)

    Useless 'fact of the day'!

To date, they all use just their first names (and they're all 20+ now)

How about those folks who just can't decide? I know a young woman who has a hyphenated first name AND a hyphenated last name. For goodness sake just make up your mind!

When I was a child, back in the dark ages before we were all enlightened to cultural sensitivities, anyone who had more than two syllables in their last name was generically refered to as Johnny (or Janey) Alphabet.

Personally, I'm not particular as to what I'm called as long as I'm not called late to supper
