Well, that's a pretty open-ended question, are you looking for an answer, or to start a debate
Seriously though, I'm not entirely sure how to answer that question, as there have probably been volumes, upon volumes written and published on that subject. Maybe if you gave us something a little more specific to start with?

In Photography it can be applied to determine the area of the canvass you wish to print your image on.
