In case you haven't found them yet, Nik's own series of video tutorials (here) are, I think, an extremely useful learning resource (I see there is a new one up that I haven't looked at yet - "Advanced Silver Efex Pro 2 Techniques with Dan Hughes.").

Thank you for your replies and Andre to answer your question I would just have to say that I played around with the various sliders until I got the result I liked,the programme is that good even an idiot like me can get decent results from it.
