How much for the usage rights to a photo?

I just had a guy that wanted to use 3 of my wildlife images, in a calendar , with a 4000 run. He will be selling the calendar.

I don't have any idea of what to charge for the use of my images.

I would appreciate any feedback on the matter. What is the going rate for such a use?

How much does he stand to make when his costs are deducted?

Personally I have to "admire" folks who still try to produce calenders for sale in a digital age -- "ballsy" stuff.

I was hoping you would respond to this.

I have no idea what he will be making in profit. I don't mind if he uses the photos, but i want to charge a fair price, and make shure he doesn't misuse my images for something else.

Well ... the usual way to end up with a little money from calenders is to start with a lot of money and watch it fritter away!

Really 2 issues here as I see it ...

    1. The compensation for the use of your three photos and

    2. Rights usage

For the first, I'd do some maths ... $4000 @ $10 ea = $40,000 - less GST - less retail costs/margin - less printing costs - less advertising etc suggests to me that he's probably not going to make a lot of money -- so he won't be able to afford to pay much. Part of something is better than all of nothing, so why not just start at $100 each, and if he balks at that, offer a "Christmas special" of "buy two, get one free"?

For the second, you just need to put something in writing stating what is and isn't included.

    Good for you.

Make sure to specify the particular and specific usage that these will be put to ie "xxx 2013 calendar" for months x,y,z only and that photographer is credited. You should retain ownership.
