7:31 Canadian Pacific Friegth Train Eastbound

Out playing with my new toy, a 2 stop reverse grad trying to get this beautiful sunset and guess what came along. I should have know as there are two separate railway lines running along here, Canadian National on the right hand side and Canadian Pacific on the other side of the image. I was just getting ready to take the shot and Johnny Cash happened ("I heard that train a'commin") and a only of my best friends is a train nut I waited until it came into view and got closer. I think that over all it came out quite well.

    Cheers:

Alan, this is an amazing shot. The colors are incredible and the tracks on the right leading us into the sunset, terrific.

What kind of filter did you get and was this all from one shot?

Very nice shot... the train makes it almost surreal.

Sergo: it was a sing-ray 2 stop gradulated netural density filter, most are darkest at the top and lighten up as it moves down, this is darkest middle fading to lightest at the top, so you place the darkest portion over the sun on the horizion to knock down the brightness. It was taken with a Nikon D600 using a 16-35mm set at 16mm. It is one shot worked in raw, opened as a smart object than a copy by new smart layer via copy. This allows me to go back into raw and further tweet the image. A couple of layer asjustments for brightness and constract with masks to better control of the adjustments done.
If you want one of those filters you had better like doing sun sets and rises as they are expensive and I mean expensive.

    Cheers:

Superb shot and excellent results from that filter.

Excellent shot Allan. The three things that really make it for me are

    • The colours on the foliage
    • That fabulous sky
    • The way the railway tracks lead to the sun
