    Its About The Sky

Donald, this image came to mind when I was commenting on your image that has a very difficult name. For me this image is about the sky including the color of the clouds and the effects of the light going through smoke and the shadows from the clouds. All of the "stuff" at the bottom is an anchor for the sky. Perhaps I violated some rules by dedicating so much of the image to the sky but somehow it just seemed ok.

The photo was taken on the Zapata Ranch looking over the Great Sand Dunes National Park with the sun rising over the San de Cristo Mountains in Colorado.

Perhaps, but who cares. Rules are made to be broken.

They key part of what you wrote, for me, is "... but somehow it just seemed ok." That's what it's got to be about. As far as I'm concerned, you've got to 'feel' the final image and not just think of it as a technical exercise.

That's as good a capture of the rays of the rising sun as I've seen.

No chance of that ever happening Steve - it's protected with a watermark!

I've never seen a sky or an image of a sky that has the sun's rays so evenly distributed across the entire sky. Absolutely gorgeous, Chuck!

    Re: Its About The Sky

Thanks to all of you for your kind words. I think I have mentioned before that skies like these seem to happen when the west is on fire. This past summer we had some fires that burned for over two months. There were times here in Jackson Hole when it was difficult to breath because of all the smoke. Light is scattered as it hits particles of smoke, but when there is an object in the way of the light such as a cloud a shadow is created. Look carefully at the image and you can see a cloud at the beginning of most of the rays. Just couldn't get the photo without the clouds.

Although the smoke helps set up photos like this one, it creates very difficult conditions for other kinds of photography. Some of the landscape images I have posted lately I could have not taken until we had some snow or a significant amount of rain to douse the fires. It is an interesting system - ying and yang. Cheers, Chuck
