Too Much Manip?

I wanted to make this portrait a little bit different. I have close cropped and applied a slight oilifying filter. I think I am OK with it but your views will be much appreciated

The face seems a little softer than the hands, did you miss the focus or did the filter mess it up? I cant see much evidence of a filter, so either its subtle enough to work, or too subtle to have done much...
