Thanks Dave, I was panning with the bird in #1 in the viewfinder and just as I was pressing down on the shutter release it changed direction slightly putting the head in a shadow. Sometimes they are just not cooperative.

Nice in-flight captures Joe. These birds are very common here too - in fact they can be a bit of a pest at picnic grounds as they are quite tame and un-afraid of humans (harmless but always looking for an easy feed !!).

Funnily enough, I just saw some in flight yesterday at a nearby lake and thought how graceful they looked in the air.

Thanks Dave, I can relate to what you wrote about them being pests. I live in a community that is built around a golf course in Florida. At certain times of the year they like the golf course, walking up the fairways poking their beaks in the ground searching for grubs and insects. My wife and I call them Florida chickens.
